How a burn repair works
We don’t use “invisible mending” as a slogan — we tell you what’s achievable before we start. On a carpet under about three years old with a spare offcut, or a cupboard or under-bed area we can borrow from, the repair will be very hard to find. On an older, faded carpet with no donor piece, a patch will be close but not perfect, and we’ll say so.
The method: we assess the pile, backing and any underlay damage; cut the burnt section out to a clean shape; cut a donor piece from an offcut or a hidden area, matching pile direction (this is why we always ask customers to keep offcuts — see our complete guide to carpet fitting); bond it in with carpet adhesive or a heat-seam tape; then trim and groom the pile so the join settles in. A single burn takes 30–60 minutes. The carpet can be walked on straight away.

The classic triangle. If the burn has gone through to the backing we cut the damaged section out and fit a matching piece; if it is surface-only we can sometimes shear and blend it without patching. Iron burns on stairs are handled the same way as our stair carpet work — one tread at a time, without disturbing the rest of the flight.
Hair straightener and curling-tong burns.
Long, narrow melts on synthetic carpets. Usually a patch repair.
Shisha coal, candle and hearth ember burns
Deep, small and often multiple. We patch each one individually.
Friction and furniture melt.
Shiny, hardened patches where a heavy item has been dragged across a polypropylene carpet. We re-texture the fibres or patch the area. If the melt sits over a loose, rippled section, we will re-stretch the carpet on the same visit so the patch lies flat.

Not every carpet problem is damage. If a carpet has been fitted badly — ripples and bubbles that weren’t there on day one, gaps at the skirting where it was cut short, seams you can see across the room, gouged skirting boards, or a doorway bar that’s lifting — we can usually correct it without replacing the carpet. Ripples are fixed by power-stretching; short cuts and visible seams by re-trimming, re-seaming or a border patch; loose doorways by re-fixing on a wider bar. Yes. Small burns are cut out and patched with a matching piece, or sheared and blended if only the tips are scorched. On most carpets under a few years old the repair is very hard to spot.

Usually. We take a donor piece from inside a cupboard, under a radiator or beneath furniture, then patch that area with a plain remnant where it won't be seen.
On newer carpets with a good donor match, yes to the naked eye. On old, faded or heavily worn carpets a patch will be noticeable up close. We tell you which before we start.
